The words to O Holy Night were written by Placide Clappeau, in 1847. It was translated from French to English by John Sullivan Dwight (1812-1893). Clappeau, a wine merchant and mayor of Roquemaure, France. He wrote poems for his own enjoyment. The music was written by Adolphe-Charles Adam (1803-1856). Adam was born in Paris, France. He is best known for his ballet Giselle (1841) and his operatic work. I like this song because it talks about the real meaning of Christmas, Jesus. It is not just about Santa Clause and presents. This is a great hymn to sing at Christmas time. |
